Lavazza A Modo Mio® capsules: how the system works and how to choose your coffee

Lavazza A Modo Mio® capsules: how the system works and how to choose your coffee

Lavazza A Modo Mio®: the capsule system for espresso at home

Lavazza A Modo Mio® is a capsule system that makes it possible to prepare an Italian espresso at home from a single portion of coffee.

It is a system from the brand Lavazza, an Italian roaster from Turin.

Many people like to have a similar drink at home too, without having to go out to a bar.

Capsules are one of several ways to make espresso at home, alongside portafilter machines, pods or the moka pot, and each has its supporters.

Many people choose capsules for the speed of preparation and because there is no clearing up after grinding the coffee, although this is a matter of personal preference.

The system has its own characteristics, which are worth knowing before buying a machine, because the machine and the capsules have to match.

The information that follows is meant to help with an informed choice, while the details of individual products can be found in their descriptions in our shop.

A capsule, a machine and a cup are all that is needed for an espresso. The coffee does not have to be ground or measured.

In this guide we explain the general principle of how an A Modo Mio® capsule works and present the machines available.

We also look at original and compatible coffees and at the Italian drinks that can be prepared with them.

At the end we gather a few notes on caring for the machine and storing the capsules.

The guide is general in nature, and the choice depends on personal taste and everyday habits.

How an A Modo Mio® capsule works

An A Modo Mio® capsule contains a portion of ground coffee, sealed so that the machine can make a single coffee from it.

Once the capsule is inserted, the machine perforates it and hot water under pressure passes through the coffee into the cup.

The principle is therefore similar to that of other pressure machines. The grinding and measuring have already been done at the roastery.

For this reason, using the machine generally comes down to inserting the capsule and pressing a button.

Each portion is sealed separately, so the coffee stays in its packaging until the moment it is prepared.

The machine usually has a water tank, which is refilled as needed.

Because the portion is prepared in advance, the drink from the same capsule usually has a similar character.

Different capsule systems have different formats, so when switching to a machine of another system, capsules suited to the new system are needed too.

After the drink is prepared, the used capsule is taken out of the machine or collected in a container, depending on the model.

For those just starting with espresso at home, such a system can be convenient, because it does not require any knowledge of grinding coffee.

A Modo Mio® capsules fit only A Modo Mio® machines. The format is specific to this system.

The pack always states which system the capsule is made for, so it is worth checking before buying.

A Modo Mio® is a more closed system than Nespresso® Original. Compatible capsules exist, but the choice is more limited.

You can find all the capsules for this system in our A Modo Mio® capsules section.

A Modo Mio® machines: compact and with a milk function

The A Modo Mio® system offers compact machines as well as models that also prepare milk.

Compact machines generally take up little space, so they can work well in a small kitchen.

Models with a milk function are designed for those who often choose cappuccino, latte macchiato or caffè latte.

Choosing a machine is usually a mix of practicality and taste, so it is worth looking at your own way of drinking coffee.

Those who mainly drink espresso often do not need a milk function, and simpler operation can be convenient for them.

In a household where different people like different drinks, a model with a milk function can offer more possibilities.

It is also worth checking the manual to see how daily use and cleaning work for the chosen model.

When choosing a machine, a few points are worth considering.

The first is space: how much room can be given to the appliance in the kitchen.

The second is the type of coffee, that is, whether one mainly drinks espresso or more often drinks with milk.

The third is the number of people who use the machine every day.

You can find the full range in the Lavazza A Modo Mio® machines section.

Those who choose a compact model can add a milk frother, which you will find among the accessories.

There is no model that suits everyone, and the decision depends on taste and daily habits.

Original and compatible coffees for A Modo Mio®

Within the A Modo Mio® system, you can choose between original Lavazza coffees and compatible capsules.

Our range includes original Lavazza A Modo Mio® capsules in several blends of different intensity.

Lavazza is a well-known Italian roaster, so its capsules are a natural starting point for many people.

The blends differ in intensity, so you can choose a milder or a stronger coffee.

The description of each coffee, including information on its composition and any allergens, can be found on the product page and on the pack.

Among them there is also a decaffeinated blend, for those who wish to reduce their caffeine.

Decaffeinated coffee significantly reduces the caffeine, but does not remove it completely.

Alongside the original coffee, we offer capsules compatible with the A Modo Mio® system from Caffè Borbone and from our own brand, Maracatú.

Each producer prepares its own blends, with different flavour characteristics.

Compatible capsules offer an additional way to discover different flavours with the same machine.

The intensity scale on the pack is set by each producer, so the values of different brands are not directly comparable.

We explain how to read these markings in our guide to how to read a coffee label.

The scale is most useful for comparing coffees within one brand, and the choice of intensity depends on personal taste.

Espresso, lungo and cappuccino with A Modo Mio®

The basic drink from an A Modo Mio® machine is espresso, a short and intense coffee.

Those who prefer a longer coffee can try a lungo, if their machine allows it.

Much depends on the settings and capabilities of the specific machine, which the manual describes, so not every model will prepare every one of these drinks.

Cappuccino and other drinks with milk need frothed milk, which can be prepared by a machine with a milk function or by a separate frother.

The choice between a shorter and a longer coffee often depends on the time of day and on mood, and it can change during the week.

Espresso is traditionally served in a small cup, but the vessel can be adapted to your own habits.

Some people also like to serve espresso over ice on warmer days.

In drinks with milk, some people add a little cocoa or cinnamon, but that is a matter of taste.

If you would like to learn the names of and differences between Italian coffees, we invite you to read our article on Italian coffee types.

Many people warm the cup before preparing the coffee, for example with hot water.

A warm cup generally helps the drink stay hot for longer.

In drinks with milk, you can use the milk you prefer, including plant-based ones.

Because of possible allergens, it is always advisable to read the label of the milk or plant-based drink.

These are only suggestions: everyone can adapt the drink to their own taste.

Caring for the machine and storing the capsules

A capsule machine needs little care, and one of the more important aspects is descaling.

Over time, limescale can build up in the machine, and how often to descale depends, among other things, on the hardness of the water and on how often the appliance is used.

The procedure is described in the machine manufacturer's instructions.

You can find suitable products in our filters and descalers for coffee machines section.

Before and after descaling, it is a good idea to consult the manual, because each machine may require slightly different steps.

The cleaning of parts such as the drip tray is usually described in the same manual.

It can be convenient to keep the capsules in an airtight container or in their original packaging.

Before buying a larger number of capsules, it is worth checking the date shown on the pack.

It is a good idea to keep the capsules in a dry place, away from heat and light.

We have gathered more advice in our article on storing coffee and capsules.

How to deal with used capsules is stated on the pack.

In short, A Modo Mio® is a system that makes it simple to prepare an Italian espresso at home, and the choice of machine and coffee depends on each person's taste and habits.
